Andrew, If you don't know starboard from port your a "Fockholepunkter" and should be comfortable with admitting that.

The edge of the channel is a continuous obstruction, thus, he had to give you rights, even if you were port. Need a lawyer? J/K (about the lawyer).

about the shallows, for real, if he had to tack to miss it.

Haha... i know starboard from port....

what is in question is my recollection of the wind direction and where Dave was pointing.

This happened about 4 months ago... and i didnt recall all the details. I thought he was reaching, and i was close-hauled...

Ummm, that's not the right method to back up a cat.
confused

Next time starting from in irons try pushing the boom over hard to leeward (so it starts to backwind) while holding the rudders with the blades angled to leeward (ie. pull the tiller to windward). Boat will beging backing...feather direction with the helm. Now you've got a reverese gear!

The CORRECT solution was to realize I had starboard rights, sheet out to slow up a bit, and duck my stern.

I DO race occasionally and a few years back I did a port t-bone on someone, not having in mind which tack I was on. Since then after every tack to port I say out loud to myself, "I'm on PORT now". No more ef-ups...well, not as many.

Thats not exactly how you desctibed it in your email to me.

You wrote, "That was my first time out in the boat, about 90 seconds off the beach, and my knowledge of the boat's tacking ability was zero. It was a narrow channel, near a mark, I was tacking badly away from a sudden shoal with rudders popped up, and I was on starboard. I missed the tack and hit the marker anyway."

Your story is getting fuzzy (just like your ears and nostrils)

Wow! And to think next year I get to move to Dunedin and play with you guys. I think I'll have to outfit my boat with armor.
And I thought retirement would be boring...

Beware of reckless Nacra 5.0's (with fuzzy ears) screaming "I'M ON PORT NOW" to them-self, floating helplessly into markers and other obstructions

If the Starboard vs leeward gets gonfusing just paint the starboard hull green and the port one red. then all you have to do is look down. if your on green go if your on red stop.

I have a boat cover with the red and green colors on it.

Works great it hasn't been T-Boned yet in the driveway.
