Hey there,

Had some trouble with halyard and the locking swage getting stuck in top pulleys. Mine locks into cleat at top of mast on the front and catches on the way up and down.

What types of halyards do others use?
Anyone use spectra?
Do you lock it off at top or bottom of mast?
Anyone use a ring and hook system like the nacra?
Any photo's of system as tried to find but couldn't?

Any comments.

Cheers,

hi drew, i use a hook and a stainless ring welded onto the main halyard shackle. the ring is much like a rescue boat tow ring as we used to have on ourr junior dinghys. i have seen a slightly different setup on darryn kopp's boat bullet. he uses( i beleive) a hook with a ring attached to the sail. and the halyard has no shackle, the halyard gets fed around the ring so it stands up and then the halyard gets tied to the headboard. his system seems to attach and release easier than mine. darryn if your reading how about a photo of your setup???? if you look on page two of this forum, simon clavin has a question called mast hook. that might leed you to some answers. sorry must go there are dumb butt concretors that need me to hold their hand again.

Drew,

There are a couple of photos in the Rigging photo album.

The one in the link below is a common one which is probably the same as the Nacra.

Mossie Rigging Photo Album http://s51.photobucket.com/albums/f...=view&current=riggin_2006_0917BW.jpg

Lock it off at the top of the mast. Locking at the bottom would just add too much stretch in the halyard and prevent you from getting the most out of the downhaul system. crazy

Peter

The hook in the photo and ring/shackle to go with it are available directly from AHPC - 03 5443 6910.

The pulley is a standard Ronstan fitting - just held in place by the pin.

Thanks all for info.

I get how it hooks on but could someone explain how you release.

I believe it is by rotating mast, does this simply lift the ring off the hook?

That's correct.

If it's set up right it should just hook on when you've pulled the halyard all the way. note... need to keep pointed into the wind to keep ring and hook lined up.

For releasing... pull hard on the halyard to lift the ring off the hook and rotate the mast which allows the ring to "miss" the hook as you release the halyard.

Cheers

Drew,
Ours is slightly different again as we use an endless halyard which returns to the fitting attached to the sail. Simply pull it up and when it is at the top the other end of the halyard is pulled back down, hey presto, locked.....to unlock simply pull up a bit and it releases.
Happy to send you a pic. and the advantage is no halyard to tuck away.

G,day all
I use the same set up as in Peters picture which works good once you get use to it, but tucking away the halyard is a pain. I like the sound of Davids set up. Dave would you be able to email me a picture. thanks.

Furr Ball,

I have added some images of the system I use.

Hope the images can be viewed.

Hi all,

the system as pictured by Peter is the same as I had on Twice Bitten, which is now at Peters club also. great system easiest, latch and unlatch of any I have used.

Although the rotate your mast systems are OK, once you work out if you need rope behind ring or in front to get it to hook on and usualy there is a best side to rotate it towards to unhook as well, but once you get used to them they are OK if designed correctly, which the AHPC one is.

I guess I like the continuous halyard type as pictured by Peter as it is fool proof on and off regardless of wind flapping sail and you don't have to tuck halyard away. Mind you the A class sailors don't like the weight of the halyard up the mast never mind 2 lengths with this system, but I can live with it whistle. Don't think that Bob would though wink

Whilst derigging the other day at Cleveland after the Peel Island Marathon, Ross Guinea of Nacra Australia approached me and commented on my Main Halyard system. My main Halyard is 4mm spectra which runs to a block at the top of the mast then back down the side of the mast, where it ties off at the bottom of the mast. Ross was telling me that by doing this, when the downhaul is put on, the mast goes into compression, as such wont bend the way it is suppose to, as such the sail wont flatten properly, so consequently my downhaul isnt doing anything. Being who he is im inclined to take his word for it, so im very much considering changing to a hook and ring at the top of the mast.

Any thoughts/comments/experiences?

Cheers.
Michael.

He's right.

As I think Tim mentioned a few posts up, you can get everything you need from AHPC. They will bend a Taipan hook to suit the Mozzie section and post it to you. You could get the pulley and ring/shackle from your local shop if you preferred but I'd just get it all from AHPC. I had to re-do the top of my mast recently and the stuff arrived 2 days earlier than they promised and took about 20 minutes to fit.

My sail hooks and unhooks every time.

Cheers,

Simon

all,

For what it matters the system I use is the same as Peter's and again, same comments, works a treat.

Difference is that I made ours myself but basically the same.

Cheers.
Michael.
