I was simply mentioning it as an alternative to wearing harnesses

I was hoping to get some input from the Tybee types about the IC sliding seat. It seems to have worked well for a long time.

AFAIK, in the Tybee We've always used harnesses.

The old Worrell guys in the development days did some crazy stuff with racks that went up and down depending on the tack you were on.

Maybe you should just get some wings.

Fun in the Sun had some Goodall harnesses that looked like they would be comfortable. Anyone seen/used those?

I dunno - but they do try to fly (and fail miserably).

I do not know about you but lacing a strap across my nuts is the definition of UNcomfortable. My first Hobie harness was that way and was about enough to send me to mono-hulls.

Try a real full harness (one with leg straps) if you get fatigued. The fatigue issue I always had was no so much from the trap position in long distance stuff, but getting uncomfortable looking constantly in the same direction. It is worse in light air when not on the tramp as you typically are sitting awkwardly, looking up at extreme angles and tense from willing your boat to move that little bit faster so you can get out on the trap to relax.

If you have wings and a trap system, you gain no advantage in ease. If you do not have a trap, then you will end up hiking, and if you have spent any amount of time trying to hike with your current straps, you will agree trapping is way the better way to go.

Todays crotchless harnesses, with lumbar supports, etc., are very comfortable. Is this another what kind of harness thread?

Some of the original A-Cats back in the late 60s had sliding boards. They were pretty narrow boats. Problem was you didn't dare forget to slide it to the windward side.

To answer the legal question - they are legal but they cannot extend out past the 2.5m width - making them very inefficient. Correct?

Have you ever tried to sail a International Canoe w/ a slider???? or a Chesapeake Log Canoe w/ planks???? or a TheMightyHobie18 MAGNUM??? I've done all three ... well I've attempted the first two with various degrees of success and the H18Mag I do all the time sometimes just on the wing and sometimes trapped off of the wing.

With the IC I spent most of my time swimming ... tippy boat, and I could never get the hang of it.

The Chesapeake Log Canoe ... ALOT of work moving those planks through from side to side. Then out on the plank ... in on the plank ...out ... in ...out/in ... then you have a hole in your sailing shorts !!!! Or if someone's timing is just a little off ... it's swimming time!!!

Trappin out from a H21SE or a H18Mag is a HOOT ... you are high above the water .... and when you stuff it you go flying so farrrrrrr....... Onetime while double trapped off the wings a micro burst hit us, immediately driving the bows under and off we went ... Tarzan and his apprentice ... we snapped both bungies ... and swung out and up until I was looking back at the boat, standing on it's bows as we dragged it forward through the water at the end of the trap wires with our weight/momentem. I never have fallen so far before I hit the water ... we must have been +25' in the air at the top of the arc.

Then of course there is also "The Thomas Crown Affair" w/ the "Ladder Rack" salvaged from one of the Worrell N6.0's. Rick Bliss?? took that leap I believe ....

So having done three of the four ... I recommend a "GOOD" Crotchless Harness ..... I got a Murrays Crotchless when they first came out(1988-89)... used them up eventually (I had two that I had new "seats" sewn in by a sailmaker to extend their lives), good harness .... got a "Musto 6-8 years ago, EXCELLENT ... tried my friend's "Black Magic" recently, even BETTER .... So there are some excellent harnesses out there, the secret is just make sure you have a good spreader bar.

On that Video ... do you think that masthead US flag had something to do w/ the flip???? Once you fly a hull too high the wing drags in the water ... the boat stops ... and gravity takes over .... SPLASH. Thats why you never see TheMightyHobie18 Magnums in hull flying contests ... before you get to the neutral balance point you drag the leeward wing .... and you're done ....
