if you live in a city that allows cats to park overnight on the beach,... how is that managed? do they limit it? are there permits?

I ask because our city is about to propose a permit system that only allows 2 nights a month..... ugggggg i sail 10 days a month...

thanks

this is all still in the works... but according to Glenn (concession stand) this would be waived for race events.

The city lawyer and I talked about options for about 1/2 hour yesterday. they seem very willing to try and work out a solution that is fair for all...

I sail out of N. Myrtle Beach. They have a sticker system that provides me with police protection for my boat. I can contact them and ask that anyone found on my boat be removed or charged if the boat has been vandalized in any way. I am not required to have this sticker and there is no time limit the boat can be on the beach. During the recent winter months they have been towing boats that appear to be abandoned in the dunes, if you have the sticker they will not tow you. There are various rules about where the boat can be parked with sails up, life guards will clear the water for me to launch. Landing the boat has become a problem in recent years with the crowding of the beaches and abnormally high tides coupled with erosion. There used to be 15 boats parked with mine, now its just me. I rarely see any cats on the water and people don't even ask for a ride unless its a question about renting the boat or paying for a ride. Its kinda depressing that there aren't more folks sailing in the Myrtle area.

Thanks for the input.

unfortunately they are no longer willing to let us have unrestricted use as it seems you have.... but they are being very willing to talk about a reasonable compromise.

The South Carolina coast is unique in that it is > 100 miles of nothing but sandy beaches. Very few places that you could not beach a boat on our coast, except in areas of inlets and cuts.

Glad you asked, DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU!!!

Here's how they handle this in Newport, RI:

http://www.cityofnewport.com/departments/economic-development/harbor/pdf/king_boatlaunch_regs.pdf

and

http://www.cityofnewport.com/departments/economic-development/pdf/King_Park_Boat_Trailer_Permit.pdf

These regs came into being in the early 90s. A genuine attempt was made (I believe it was a formal proposal) at a city hall meeting to distribute seasonal, overnight boat stickers so boats could remain at the beach with mast-up storage.

Legend has it that the city was behind it until a single resident (with too much money and not enough decency) who lived across the street got it shot down to protect his view of the boats moored in the harbor.

Good thing I'm not still bitter about that...

Mike

That is my fear... so far they have been willing to work with us. Last year when it came up... i spoke with the attorney. He said if you can get the officer who made the complaint to drop it.. i will.

That was last year... we have been good... (not leaving boats for to extended periods)... but it is back...

they (lawyer and parks/rec manager seem to be willing to work out a compromise before it goes to city council to become law)....

There is none to be had in South west Florida. Beach launching a catamaran is a crime. frown

Delray Beach, Florida if you are a resident- Mast Up Storage for $200 a year on the beach, probably 60 feet from the waterline, not across the street. 60 permits allowed with 30 still available. Move to Delray

Two hours. Basically, Lee and Collier Counties don't won't you on the beach if you aren't renting a motel room.

Did I mention that 98% of the time it is onshore winds. I lived in Sarasota before and still prefer the Atlantic to the Gulf. Did I also mention that I can sail either North to Palm Beach or South to Ft Lauderdale stop in and have lunch watch the bikini clad girls play beach volley ball and sail home the 15 or so miles on a reach.

In Virginia Beach no cat parking is allowed on the southern, commercial (i.e. boardwalk) section of the Atlantic oceanfront. A City permit/sticker system is still in place for the northern, residential Atlantic oceanfront (though rarely used anymore). The permit is yearly, about $30 and good for the summer. Boats are supposed to be off the beach by, like, 1 OCT. Unregulated cat parking is allowed on the Chesapeake bayfront. Some of the gentry get their panties in a wad about the appropriate use of a public beach but generally, if you tie up your halyards so they don't bang, it's not a problem.

Hi HullFlyer,

I have yet to see a Delray guy sail to Palm Beach execept during the Delray Drag when ya'll had it. Miss that race!!!

Singer Island is open, you just need to coordinate with the people that run the beach. They will also keep an eye if you pass them a beer here and there.

Currently my boat is at Dog Beach (Briny Breezes) which is about five milesand no permit is required there. Rob Behrend had a Full Moon party two weeks ago and used the boat for that. We are sailing it back to Singer Island this weekend.

Craig,
You should pick up where Chip left off and do your own version of the Delray Drag Race, maybe the guys at Dog Beach would help, and Chuck from the rental spot South has always helped in the past. Do you have to live in Briny Breezes to keep your boat on the beach there? If so that's not free.

I left my boat mast up on the trailer locked to a lightpole. I had to be somewhere, the wind died a long way from the beach and I was really short on time. I was semi surprised my boat/trailer were there the next morning. Also surprised that nothing had been messed with or vandalized.
