I tested the battens in one of my sails yesterday to check the position of the pocket and to see whether my battens needed to be further tapered.

The %s where the draft was located when each batten was bent to 10% of its length were: 44.5%, 45.2%, 41.5%, 44.4%, 46.1%, 44.3%, 44.5%.

My first question is, what % are most people using with their mossie battens? From what i understand, most modern cats are using battens tapered to around 35%, where as most monos use battens around 50%. I know the mossie is an older design, with a much lower aspect ratio sail compared to a-class, f18 etc, so im just curious as to what % most mossie sailors have their battens tapered to.

Secondly, is the current spread of %s on my battens close enough, or should the range be smaller.

Cheers.
Michael.

42 percent is what I set mine to which matches my sail.

What sort of sail do you have?

The "spread of percentages" is outside the range I would be happy with.

I mark 42percent on the batten then use a belt sander to get the bend I am looking for. Always have to check it in the sail up the mast so it takes alot of sanding then put the sail up, check it, pull sail down and more sanding then repeat.

Michael,

The Mozzie Tuning Guide reflects the 35% and also has a tolerance of +/- 2%. I don't think I have ever checked my fibrefoam battens. I just assumed they would be correct with a stiff trailing section. wink Oh well, that's another thing to put on the "to do" list. cry

The spread doesn't appear to be too drastic however the 41.4% batten appears to be a bit beyond the normal spread.

I suppose the ultimate test for you is putting the battens in the sail then laying the yacht on its side (represents wind loading) with your normal sail and mainsheet settings and checking where the maximum depth occurs.

Does you Mozzie have noticeable weather helm ? Having the depth too far aft would produce this.

Regards,

Peter
