After a successful 2009 winter circuit we are sure to be in for more great sailing this winter. New people to the class, new boats hitting the water and even more northerners planning to beat the chill (it was rumored to be 38deg and snow for the last race on Lake Hopatcong last week) this year is shaping up to better than ever.

This year the schedule is almost identical to last year. The main change is removing one regatta from last year’s schedule and ending the circuit after the 4th main event in March. The dropping of this one event in April is in preference of supporting an A-cat event in the district 4 schedule (I believe it to be in Ft Walton sometime in May)

I have included in the table below our 2nd tier (local district 3) regatta dates. These regattas will primarily be supported by local district 3 boats. However we should have a reasonable A-cat contingent at each. I have included these dates as someone may find a date or regatta that fits their schedule. If you have a date that you feel should be added to the list please email the details to the webmaster to be added to the USACA calendar.

Winter Circuit 2010

The first two A-cat winter Circuit events are held back to back at the Islander Resort in Islamorada in the FL Keys these events have been a staple for the A-Cat fleet for many years. Details of the events are below. NOR and details for online registration for these two events will be posted soon, registration will cover both events.

A discount on accommodation at the resort is on offer for all competitors. When booking just mention you are there for the A-Cat sailing regatta. These bookings need to be made by Nov 14th to receive the discounted rate. They do not offer online reservations. For bookings call toll free number 800-753-6002 800-753-6002 or e-mail shannon@islanderfloridakeys.com This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or front Office Manager crystal@islanderfloridakeys.com This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . They do require a credit card to confirm the reservation. The rooms are set aside to check in on Friday the 8th of January (you can check in later if you wish) and departing out on the 14th of January. If you want to stay longer you can, as long as the room is open and as long as you reserve prior to the group cutoff date so you receive the discounted room rate.

Event details

Coconut Grove Sails Invitational Jan 11th & 12th - This is the first of two events held back to back. The first two day event gives everyone the opportunity to wash out the cobwebs get on the water and enjoy some great racing. On land it is a great time to catch up with friends old and new. Hot-tub, pool, restaurants, bars, Woody’s the options are endless! For those who arrive early, on Sun Jan 10th there will be a race/ races for people to practice. The day is called the Islander Triangles you can register for this event on the day.

A-Cat Intergalactic Championships Jan 13th & 14th - This is the second two day regatta immediately after the first at the same location. Instead of struggling with scores from your first two days of racing. You get to reset and put into practice what you have learned over the past three days.

2010 A-Cat Midwinter Championships Feb 5th – 7th – Held in conjunction with the International 505 class Midwinter championships. For the third year we will be sailing of the beautiful white sandy beaches of Ft Desoto State Park near St Petersburg FL. With white beaches warm water (relative) and stable breezes, this event produces some great sailing. The social calendar is kept full during this event with parties planed each evening. There is plenty to do in and around St Pete so bring the family. NOR and regatta details along with details regarding Online registration will be posted soon. Booking accommodation online is easy we suggest anywhere on St Pete beach. Expedia has most hotels listed including prices.

2010 Admiral’s Cup – Mar 26th – 28th - The second annual event to be held out of the beautiful inner coastal town of Bokeelia is a special one! With the rigging launching, race headquarter and parties based on the lush green lawn of Ben Hall’s Florida home. Big, open, flat, warm water with stable breezes what more could you ask for? Last year was an awesome event and one not to be missed this year. Online registration will be posted soon. Accommodations in Bokeelia fill up quickly in March. There are several houses and condos available within walking distance of the boat location. (Call Ben Hall for more info).

Hi Ben,

any new about yr container of 6 Gel-Tek ASG3 to be shipped to the US last September?
It would be interesting to know how the ASG3 compares to the BIMARE VR1, (and hopefully to the Flyer S), to have a clear view of the latest fashion in A cat design:
I mean is if the measures given in March 2009 are confirmed and mainly if Glen sticked to the short foot mainsail.
Thanks

Boats have been held up a little. Due to Arrive Dec. It will be difficult for us to compare to the V1 as there are none in the US. The ITA guys have a container of Glenn's boats on the water as we speak. I believe there is a few V1's in ITA smile. I am sure we will get right into development and tuning once the boats arrive. While most of the new boats will start with the current short foot Ashby sail, I am sure we will end up seeing a mix of sails on the new boats. With that said i am sure we will see a variety of foot lengths.

Thanks Ben for yr prompt reply, but apparently you are not aware that BIMARE just launched a new design named V1R which follows the "fashion" started with the ASG3 and the Flyer S (actually there is only ONE V1R sailing i.e. the first prototype).
The distintive feature of all the 3 boats is the translation of the the main beam (and consequently of the boards) backwards, but, while on the V1R both beams have been moved backwards of the same amount in order to allow the use of the "old" mast/main combo, for the ASG3 Glenn opted (at least at the beginning) for a new short foot main.
To have a look at photos and a couple of video of the V1R click on: http://www.bimare.org

Compared to the “old” V1 the new V1R features:
- front and REAR beam back 230 mm (9 inches)
- boards’ trunks back 170 mm (6.7 inches)
- more volume for the whole length of the hull but for the first meter (bow). In this area the V1R is narrower
- a narrower deck from bow to stern
- a front beam 5 mm deeper into the hull. This, together with the new seam and the revised decks at the trunks, makes the V1R’s platform 20% stiffer

I did hear of a new boat coming. It looks nice! it would be nice to see one make it to the US but I still think there is more chance of comparisons to the ASG3 in ITA. Our benchmark is certainly the A3. Lars sails exceptionally well but the other guys with A3's and Glaser's are also going very quick. It is hard to tell but in the footage the V1R still looks like it has a lot more rocker than the Flyer II,ASG3 amd A3 especialy around the main beam

If you don't want to drag a boat to any of these regattas but would like to race here's an idea:
Ian Lindahl has the new LR2 and LR3 in Tampa. He is in Florida for the winter working and is going to attend most all of these regattas. He will double stack both boats to a regatta if someone is interested in sailing one of them. There would be a minimal rental fee and you would need insurance. If interested in purchase we then apply the rental fee to purchase price.

I will swing by Islander tomorrow and ask around.... but out of curiosity... any other charter boats available for midwinters? I would need it to be very close to St. Pete.
I heard the LR's are going to be sold.

Get on the USACA mailing list and send out that question. I'm kinda on the fence for mid-winters, will definitely be at Admirals cup. If you show up at midwinters that might convince me to do that.Make it happen,Jr.
