I just got home after watching the start. one of the Royal boys had an early lead. The Roberts' boat started in the middle but was taking boats quickly, by 8:10 they had a good lead. Wind was East to ESE. I couldn't judge the wind because I was on the top of the RICKENBACKER Causeway. It was probably 15Knts on the bridge.

Okay, Rick just got back from the bridge. He says Mike Phillips was first to finish on Marstrom 20, Eric Roberts second on RC 30, and Steve Lohmayer third on Inter 20.

No spinnakers -- too close a reach.

That's assuming nobody capsized or anything right before the finish, but Rick said he could see them all the way across Barnes Sound, and positions did not change from what they were going under the bridge.

Pretty sure it was Mike, and then Eric, then it may have been Bret Moss in third, Kenny Pierce in 4th and Steve in 5th.
That is after looking at the order of the pictures Rick took.

Nice ride down and back today. The sail back to Miami was even faster. Made it back to the MYC by 12:15.

Order of finishes based on what I saw and talk on the beach: 1) Eric Roberts around 1 hour 54 min, 2) Mike Philips with the curvy boards on the M20 in 2 hours 7 min, 3) Bret Moss straight board M20 a couple minutes later, 4) Steve and Jay N20, 5) Jamie and son (second time on boat) in the big T, 6) Kenny P with all female crew on Stilleto 23. A big F31 was rocking it pretty good in the top ten, followed by a pack of H 16's. A very reachy day.

Hopefully good times had by all. Love to see those pics when you get 'em Rick and Mary.

Wow, Rick was really off with his finish guesses. I told him it didn't look like Kenny on that yellow boat.

Won't be any pictures posted until Rick can write a story, and he can't do that until the results are made public, and I guess that doesn't happen until after the trophy presentations next weekend.

John McKnight is soliciting stories about the race below. He does this annually, and submits them to me. And we then run them in the magazine.

I would like to send you some Miami to Key Largo Race stories from the race
yesterday. But I have a problem...........I don't have any stories. This
is where you come in. I would like to hear about your adventure, and I am
sure the other sailors would like to know what happened to you. Anyone on
the crew can tell their story, it does not have to be the skipper. In fact it
is often interesting to hear from both the skipper and the crew to get two
perspectives on the same race.

I only know my story and I just heard a few snippets of some other sailors'
stories after the race at Gilbert's. It was a windy exciting race so let
me know how you did. Kenny, how do you make that classic Stiletto 23 go so
darn fast? Bill Stolberg, you won the H-16 class and beat many other faster
cats. How did you manage that? What is your secret? Somebody flipped a
H-16 at the Featherbeds. Who's story is that? Gustavo, I heard you flipped
your fast P-19 right at the finish line. Did that cost you a trophy? Lenny,
how was your race? Did you trophy? Dick, how did your "secret weapon"
crew work out on your H-16? Mike and Nelson, you guys had that P-19MX smoking,
how did it go? Gary, did your daughter enjoy the race? Jofre, I saw you
got a great start, how was the rest of your race? Jamie, how was the race
with your son? It looked like you had a good finish. Oscar, how was that
skippering for the first time in the MKL and with a crew you had never met
until race day. Josh, how did your race go with Oscar? How was that sailing a
round trip? Mike, how did the new curved daggerboards work on you M-20.
Bret, were you able to beat the curved daggerboard M-20? Is the new
technology overrated? I don't know how that two boat Marstrom 20 dual turn out.
Clive, how do you pull up the daggerboards while sailing solo on your A-Cat?
We were right on your heels all day, but couldn't catch you. Julian, your
assignment for today is to write me an essay about your adventure. Coop, how
was your race on your G-Cat 6.1? How was your new crew working out? Terry,
it was fun dicing with you all day. How was your race? Steve and Jay
(Inter 20), awesome job guys, I think you said you were 4th overall. How did
you manage that? Chris, how was your race on the I-20. Taylor and Mac, how
was your
H-16 race. You didn't let those old guys from Ft. Lauderdale beat you, did
you? Scot, how did your new H-16 fare in the race. I saw that sail number
44 motor by me before the Featherbeds. Nice! Carlos, you do very well for
a guy who only races one race a year. How did it go? Does anybody know of
an all day baby sitter for the Beckmanns? Chris, I never saw your F-16
Blade, how was your race? Jack, how did your Stiletto 27 perform? Eric and
Bill, what is it like to be the first boat to finish? Does anyone have Eric's
or Bill's new email address?

I would like to hear from the big multis also. Victor, did you win your
class again this year? Tom, how were your new sails working for you? Mike,
how did the floating condo do? Did your large crew behave themselves?
Robert, was that you on your
F-28R tearing up the class? How about that F-31, Lucky Star? I don't have
Alex's email on the CABB list, but wow, what a performance they put in.
That thing was hauling butt. Andy, how did you and John do on your F-24?
Rick, how did things go on Matador?

Please send me your story to pass along. At the top of the story, put down
who all was sailing on the boat and what boat you were sailing. Tell me
what your race was like. What did you feel? What did you see? What did you
hear? Did you enjoy the race? Did you have enough wind? Were you cold?
Did you run aground? Did you flip? Will you ever do that race again?

Great questions...now that you mentioned all of that, I would like to know the answers to those questions too.

Those were John's questions.., has there ever been a better Commodore of CABB? Not in my opinion.

So the winning M20 had curved boards?

The 2 M20's in the race, which finished 2nd and 3rd, were an interesting test of the curved boards versus straight boards. From what I could see looking back at them, there did not seem to be much difference in speed between the two set ups. Talking with them back at the club, they didn't seem to think the results were due to the boards. Mike Phillips M20 with the curved boards chose to sail a shorter course over the shallows, while Bret with the straight boards stayed in deeper water sailing a longer distance. One race with one set of conditions can't tell us the whole story. Hopefully Mike and Bret can do more heads up racing/testing and come to some conclusions. Interesting times!

I hated being on the sidelines for this one. Sounds like a great race. Hopefully they will continue the M20 racing next weekend down to Key West.
