That is certainly minimal.

I had a little more in mind. Move this to another thread and see if anyone is interested in developing the idea.

Just got home from Erquy-France (a 980km drive).
I haven't read the whole thread but there was a French TV crew on the beach every day doing interviews and editing some some og the helicopter footage (I hope all of that will find its way online).
This is the link to the video channel: http://www.dailymotion.com/F18MONDE
The leading source of information was probably the CatSailingNews blog.

The redress for Hugh Styles was changed in the results to be the average of his final races rather then the average of his Qualifying races, so the last race where he was sailed down the fleet cost him the title. If he had finished 62nd instead of 63rd, he would have at least comes 2nd. However, I'm sure none of them knew that on the water.

I'm an IJ and if I'm awarding average points, what I try and do is make sure that any redress is fixed going into the last day so everyone knows where they stand. So in the Jury decision say something like "redress to be average off all races in the finals on day 1 & 2", so that the morning of the third and final day, the RDG becomes fixed. Still, we don't have any detail from the Jury, so hard to comment.

Have a look at the level of detail from the Jury at the Laser Radial worlds (Ok, so I'm biased .. my daughter is on the Jury :-) .....)

http://www.laserworlds2010.co.uk/_35458/noticeboard

So the points for the top 3 going into the last race were:

1 Styles 38.4
2 Backes 39
3 Bundock 58

And without a bad race in the Finals, Styles should have had the luxury of trying to sail Backes down the fleet, instead he was the one sailed down the fleet and lost out. So the Jury decision won/lost the event for Hugh. Pity we don't even know what the Redress was for.

Paul

It is all part of the game I guess.
I doubt Styles wouldn't have done the same if the roles where reversed, IMHO it was a very smart tactical move by Bundy.
He did the same thing at the '07 worlds in Aus where he matchraced Booth down the fleet in the final race to win the title.

Judging by the last thing I saw of Styles I think he was pretty much over it. wink
We where literally kicked out of the little restaurant/bar at the beach at midnight,
some Aussies wanted to buy the place but the owner didn't go for it! (I think after a week he was happy to see the catsailors go to be honest).

Nowhere near home yet - in fact, the family joined me here in France for a few days. I'm sitting in a sweet little hotel in St. Malo, still marveling at the amazing experience of sailing a Worlds. The RC work was a bit shaky at times, but the feeling you get sailing in such a big fleet is just as incredible as it had been described to me. I spent much of the week simply flabbergasted. I feel very lucky to have had the chance to sail with Robbie - he's a very patient and level-headed skipper. Those big crowds and nutty reaches just didn't seem to phase him... I'm double-lucky to have been on the boat with someone who's "seen it all." I think our final result was pretty respectable - top US team.

Now for the big news. Our bid to host the 2012 Worlds at ABYC from September 7-15 was approved unanimously by the World Council. All the comments here about coverage need to get cleaned up and put into a media plan. Anyone who wants to roll up sleeves and pitch in, drop me a PM. Clock started yesterday. Let's show the world what we can do.

Good to know you'be been backed by the wc for the 2012 Worlds. Arg had 5 crews at Erquy but for Abyc's Worlds, we'll have more and I'll be there for sure, also Chile and Uruguay will send crews as now they already started racing on local fleets, the big challenge should be getting F18 sailors from Brazil too, but no fleet yet-

Glad it was an unanimous decision.

Cheers,
Martin

Congrats on bringing the 2012 F18 Worlds to the US. Where will the 2011 event be held?

Congrats on the 2012 bid! Sounds like a great venue.
It was nice meeting you JW, sorry I didn't get to talk to you much but a week just seems to fly by...
Enjoy your stay in Saint Malo, such a beautiful town.
Cheers.

Just got back from the Worlds (had to sail a keelboat back)

Hugh got screwed over from winning the Worlds, the press boats were not controlled at all and we nearly got hit several times by press boats going too fast in the middle of the fleet. The jury screwed him around a bit not making thier mind up.

Event was ok, good racing, but badly organize ashore sadly, nobody knew when they were putting food on and the event bar was a tiny little tent that offered very little food so very few people hung around, luckily there was a cafe just across the road (which kicked out about 70 biding customers at midnight on the last night as the wanted to close). On the sunday afternoon they tried to tell us that all of us up one end of the beach had to move to the other end to give space for swimmers, that didnt happen.

The sailors made it a really fun event though, just would of liked a bit more wind!
