I was talking and rigging the boat the other day and hooked the main blocks up backwards! Just for the hell of it I tried it and it seems to work okay. The crew can cleat and uncleat the main without slapping my legs with the sheet.

It looks really wierd but otherwise seems functional. Can anyone think of a reason NOT to rig this way? It was light air.

In light air you are likely to have some problems. Every time you go to sheet you will just end up pulling the boom towards you.

I tried it light air and it didn't seem to be a problem.

But the force is all the same regardless of which end is up, yes?

Regardless of wind speed the idea was to use the blocks as normal when sailing solo and reverse them when the crew is handling the main.

you could even lead the other end of the mainsheet to a cleat on the boom near the gooseneck.
Then you could both work it...LOL

How does center sheeting work?

You can rig it up like my boat when i sail with Riley or Peyton. Also Paul Warren and Chris Sproat had a 2:1 hooked to the end of thier main blocks giving the crew a 14 or 18:1 purchase for up wind work.

Do you have a diagram or pic of your set up?

Be a little careful of the angle of the sheet to the handler as when you come out on the wire, the rear stay seems to be right in the way. The 14:1 has a sheet coming foward of the stay for the crew to pickup and thus the stay doesn't come into play.

Finding the centre sheeting like the A's have is very good as it ends to pull your feet onto the sides while trapezing and means much more foot grip.

There is not a good cleat option for cleating directly off the boom, and from experience a forward lead sheet position is a problem with the side stay always as you move fore and aft. The A class guys mostly run an attachment with cleat to the tramp to solve this. On the A this is OK. On the F16 a lot of guys sail with crew and the line to the tramp makes maneuvers a real pain in the butt. Even uni on the F16 you have to go forward for the spin and the tramp mounting cleat option makes running the kite a bitch.

Pete, there are some pics of my boat center sheet on our Falcon Marine Facebook page. I think Paul posted some info on his set-up too at 1 point. This is what I am going to switch to as the kids are starting to be able to run some on the sheet and I do not have to do it all any more.

It is quite common to sheet from the boom on skiffs. Keeps the boat a bit cleaner of sheets and control lines. Some say they could sheet in faster.

Maybe you just have invented a new trend in cat deck layout. Go on and test it in strong winds!

Cheers,

Klaus

I plan to. I know it's a little harder to cleat but I haven't played with the adjustment yet. I'll keep you posted.

But the skiff have a ram vang too.

Basically their mainsheet is most functioning as a traveller , hence the low 2:1 or 3:1 mainsheet sheeting. The ram vang is taking care of pulling the leech tight, something we cat sailors do with our mainsheet. Basically the two setups are significantly more different then is apparent at first glance.

Note the complete lack of a cleat on this set-up.
If you run off the boom be prepared to hold the sheet full time

That's why I asked to test it in strong winds.

@Wouter
I am not saying that it is the same setup. Sometimes evolution proceeds by accident.

Klaus

I did. It's too complicated for me. All I'm doing is inverting the stack. Instead of attaching the cleat end to the traveler car, I'm attaching it at the boom. Simple and it seems to work. Time on the water will tell.
