Not for the sailors, but the OAs are certainly working within some constraints (sponsorship money, past attendance, logistics, liability, dispensation for sailing at night without lights in a shipping channel, deciding what events are best for FWYC, etc) that we may not be privy to.

A rabbit start or lemans start and snapping an image of the "official" race watch when you finish and texting it to the person willing to score the event eliminates the need for someone to sit there all night waiting for boats to finish. Heck the score keeper could be anywhere in the nation. Hmmmm.... maybe outsourcing isn't all bad :-) It's not perfect but it is a handicap race so lack of precision isn't really a significant impact anyway :-)
Zero paper zero cost.
If you race for hotdogs and trinkets then this format probably won't work.

Posts: 12,310 South Carolina | Interesting point Dave!
There are also phone apps that can text your position with a time stamp too.
Another option for timing the finishes without having to stay up all night is to setup a camera in view of the "official clock" and the finish line with a light to illuminate sail numbers. Sailors also record their finish times in a log book that can be used to cross reference the camera data (or resolve issues like multiple boats finishing simultaneously with sail numbers obscured).
My contour camera can go easily for 12 hours with a power supply...then you scroll through the video matching the log book entries with the video clock to get the official finishes.

Bottom line... it's only over when we say it's over!

Posts: 12,310 South Carolina | I don't remember fireworks but I do remember sitting at the end of the Deckhands dock with a flashlight watching the boats finish all the way into late Sunday night. Sailors hung around and drank and told stories , it was like a big family. If FWYC is having troubles with this race why don't they just reach out to the sailors and ask for some help with it . I remember when Carlton , Mike Kelly and John Reinhold sat around brewing this regatta up . I would just like to see some effort put into it.
After only five boats showed up last year I would have thought that someone there would see that something has to change. This is such a tricky thing. If someone, otherwise unassociated with the event, at the club is interesting in organizing the event, it is usually for reasons related to other things that "for the love of it". Sometimes this works out great. Sometimes not. When it doesn't, you get stuck because there is still a sense of ownership of the event that can leave things stuck without activity. The best way I've seen this pan out is if the interested sailors make personal contact and offer to help. I wouldn't ever expect, or wait for, the clubby to do request it. You would probably be surprised at how fast you can get some clarity and how simple the hurdles are. I bet you that things could get turned around in very short order if you made contact with them yourself.
