Has antone come across a waterproof, battery operated FM radio that is appropriate for sailing?

When Bob Curry and Bret Moss were sailing together, they used to have some kind of musicmaker taped to their boom. I don't know whether it was a radio or a tape player.

Bob, are you out there?

Eric,

If you're looking for a personal radio, check any swimming catalogue. They are waterproof, small/light, and pretty reasonable.

Sony used to make a pretty rugged boom-box (bright yellow, too).

How about a boom box in a waterproof bag? Guess that would make for hard times when you had to switch CDs or something.

Or maybe XM/Sirius in a waterproof bag?

A couple of guys on a Hobie 16 at Ruff Riders last year went one better than a water proof FM. They bought a throw down stereo system from a garage sale, wrapped it in plastic with some kind of power supply (car battery and inverter I assume). They then proceeded to rock down the intercoastal water way, made 80+ tacks out Mansfield cut and then sailed into the Gulf. They wern't the last to finish either!

Chris.

Hi Eric,

I use a sony sports radio in a clear dive bag so you can change the station, turn the cd player on or adjust the volume. They usually last about three or more years if you do not open it when on the water. I never leave shore with out it.

Why go so big? With a little effort we have made a custom system that truly rocks. We have raced many races including the T500, OBX500, steeplechase, and New England 100 with an MP3 player with waterproof speakers and a canabalized amplifier off of a set of portable battery powered speakers. The system all fit in a very small tupperwear container with the speakers attached inside of the tramp launch spin bag. We were sure to find an MP3 player with enough memory and battery life so that we never heard the same song on the same day. It took some minor adjustments and engineering work to get the whole thing going, but it has proved itself invaluable, especially on light air days. Actually, i think Rick did a small article on the music system during the 2003 T500.

Chris, sounds like a lot of work. Mine can also be used as a portable party. In Florida during the summer, it rains every afternoon for a couple of hours. If we get caught out away from a tiki bar we just hit the shore and grab the radio and cooler and have our own party until the storm passes. The entire set-up weighs less than ten pounds. I only weigh 140 lbs and my team mate, Rob, doesn't weigh much more than I do.

Eric, I figured that was the reason for the post. Got it at Brands mart for around $100. It really helps during the light wind times. I almost capsized once because I had great wind and was flying the hull by myself. the radio slipped down and accidentally switched channels from Stone Temple Pilots to Barry Manilow.

Barry Manilow(sp?) would make me want to flip, or worse!

Craig, bring that monster down to the Tradewinds and lets drink some rum at the Tiki Bar!

Mary,

The "system" we deployed is classified and military in nature. We were digital in an analog world!

That is right Eric, I never leave the shore without it.

I am not sure if I am going to be at the Tradewinds. We are working with Bill Roberts now on some rigging issues. We broke the front crossbar in between the bridle tangs and had to limp it during the entire steeplechase. I got an invite to crew on another boat but I might just go to help out. If I do come down, I will be sure to bring "the box".

Is Allen bringing his Supercat down?
