I have just started my second season on my Hobie 17 and found it difficult to "find" the speed again. I read Rick White's book this winter and finally managed to make a smooth (and quick) tack!
I have two questions that probably most of you can answer quite easily:
1. I do not have a jib, what is the best way/position to mount a wind vane? And what type?
2. How do you control mast rotation? Where/how do you use the lining/cleating?

Thanks,
Bart

Vane? Try two CM7703 Bent to suit your needs. One on each adjuster at the bow. Other than that. One off the front of the mast would work. We used to have an adapter for that, but looks like its not available any longer.

Mast rotation is a line tied at a cleat on the boom that then runs to the rotater arm and back to the boom cleat. Basic rotation: Rotate to near (pointing at) the shrouds upwind and 90 degrees plus downwind. I haven't raced the 17 in awhile, there is likely to be more fine tuning.

Most racers use cassette or video or 8-track tape on the bridle wires.
Matt remembered well about the rotator setting.

A couple of pieces of yarn work as well or better than cassette tape and won't tear off when you are trailering the boat.

Matt - What does CM7703 stand for?

That is the part number for a standard bridle vane. CM was for Coffee Marine... the original vendor. Hobie makes these now.
