Posts: 1,152 tampa, fl | I am sailing the Steeplechase for the first time this weekend. Anyone got any words of wisdom about this race. Also, is there a list of necessary waypoints that I can get programmed into my gps ahead of time? Thanks for any help.

Posts: 2,718 St Petersburg FL | Eat your wheaties folks! It's going to be a good one this year. Totally! DAMN!!! Saturday Northeast winds near 25 knots and gusty. Seas beyond the reef 6 to 9 feet...except higher in the Gulf Stream. Seas inside the reef 2 to 4 feet. Nearshore waters very rough. Isolated showers.

I sure hope this is in theory only!

I have not done this race in about 5 years, but I did it 5 or 6 times.
Some of the tips I Have learned the hard way
1. when you exit the creek on day 1 don’t bear off right away to go south. You will run over a shitload of sand bars and have to walk. Follow the channel out at least a ¼ mile before turning down.
2. Aproaching the finish on the first day, overstand and come in perpendicular to the beach. There are more big sandbars on the direct line to the finish.
3. Before you start the second day, tape your booties to your ankles with duct tape. If you have to step off the boat because you tried to sail over a mud bank and got stuck you will loose your booties in the mud
4. Don’t try to cross the shallows where the little mangrove trees are sticking out of the water. These are the shallowest spots.
5. make sure your boards can be pulled up fast, realy fast. Mark the board where it is up inside the hull with none sticking out. When you pull them up to cross a mud flat, you know they won’t stick.
6. When you get in the mangroves on the second day hug one side or the other. Usualy you can ghost along on the side with the top of the sail in light air above the mangrove. If that does not work break out your wooden spinnaker. Look up a lot so you don’t sail your boat into an overhanging branch and get stuck
The following advice is Florida keys related, not necessarily steeplechase related.
There is a good medical clinic on Islamarada that used to have a exceptionally cute nurse. They like patching up sailors, because all they ever see is jetskiers that run each other over. She does not like to be called nurse Ratchet.
Never let someone take your stitches out when you and she are drunk( no matter how cute she is).
Forensic pathologists are not a good source of medical advice when they have been drinking (or sober for that matter).
If you use too much lighter fluid to light the charcoll grill on your hobie 21 wing, sail upwind and you won’t set you mainsail on fire.
And the last gem from a sailor who shall remain nameless “ If you going to sleep around in the keys, wear 2 condoms and saran wrap your balls”
Good Luck Eric Wow...good advice...have you been sailing with Lloyd B? #1 ; you can cut the corner on #1 if the tide is up, but for the love of god, don't pitchpole there. The same can be said for the start of day 2 off Anne's Beach although I would recommend sailing over that one much less. It's 8" of water with a coral bottom and usually a rocky lee shore. #2 is understated. It's not just a sandbar, but a silty sandbar that is potentially 100 yards long and you sink in up to your knees. Just trying to walk, let alone run while racing a boat you've been trying to pass for an hour, is nearly impossible. You will likely lose a shoe. #4 is sometimes impossible to avoid. #5 if your crew or skipper starts to say "I think we should pull the boards up", you should have them up before they get to "...boards up" or all you will get is "I think we should pull .... {~!~~~~CRRRRUNCHHHH~~~) .... (*&$!@!@$#*(&!!!" #6 yup...and still tacked 137 times on day #2 As for the rest of it

Posts: 3,224 Roanoke Island ,N.C. | Eric, whasup cuz? Ya forgot: Don't sail 30' tall of boat under 28' of bridge, it's some physics thing. Don't take down your main in 40 knots on the water unless ya wanna keep it down and not go upwind. Don't take Jake's advice on #1 or you'll be buying boat parts. Don't forget to double bag your chicken L'orange sandwiches. Don't forget to have a blast .
Hey Eric tell everybody up your way Hey for me, I miss see'in you guys. Todd
