I heard somewhere that over 90% of lightning strikes that hit boats, the boats are on shore or in dock.

People need to be less concerned about getting hurt or dying. Its gonna happen no matter what. If you are of the type of person that is intelligent enough to sail your boat into a powerline, or sail in conditions that you may get struck with lightning, then maybe you shouldn't be sailing, and maybe just maybe you deserved your fate. Our society is too keyed to the lowest common denominator. what ever happened to Darwinism? There is almost 8 billion people on the planet, these things are bound to happen statistically no matter what. My view on the comp-tip is that its an uneccesary item. It screws with the bend of the mast, adds another joint to introduce possible failure, and wieghs more. Not much I know but every bit of weight savings up high helps. I'm done ranting, sorry.

I'm boatless.

Keep the all aluminum mast. It is a BETTER mast. And they aren't making them any more, so you now have a collectors item to bring to The Antique Roadshow. I had my boat long ago enough that I could of gotten a free retro-fit. -I didn't.

Now, if you want to compete, just find a used mast with a comp tip. The price for the used comp-tipped mast will be the same, or less, than a new retro-fit. And having TWO masts for one boat makes you a cool dude! Cool dudes attract the chicks. You say you don't WANT to be a chick magnet! Well, then just wear a Richard Nixon/Halloween mask while sailing. That should repel any unwanted beautiful boat ornaments!
