Down our way passing rule applies to sailboats. Sailboats must take care and give way to ferries and motor vessels unable to manouver easily.
This is an example of a good time to give way to a motor vessel. : )
While the rule goes the way of the sailors it is always a good idea to be paranoid. If a vessel is a long way away when you set up your run but MIGHT be able to reach you and run you down any boatie, sail or motor should presume the other guy is an idiot and presume he is behind the sail. As sailors we must look out for our own safety and understand that the sail with no window is a blind spot that is our responsiblity.
Sad thing is that on the water bigger and dumber are dangerous and idoits almost always think autohelm is a licence not to pay attention.
Right and wrong has nothing to do with it.
As an example I always slow through a green light at an intersection, because somewhere out there is a red light runner with my name on it.
