This is a good question for me AND it will show my ignorance. Do sailboats ALWAYS have the right of way over power boats? or do standard "rules of the road" (not racing rules) override the sail power versus motor power in some occasions?

(a) A power-driven vessel underway shall keep out of the way of:

1. a vessel not under command;
2. a vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver;
3. a vessel engaged in fishing;
4. a sailing vessel.

All very true, but... I have the right of way when I'm walking across the street too, but I still look for traffic before crossing

Makes me crazy when driving near a school and kids won't even look for traffic, so many of them just put their head down and walk across the street

Whenever possible, I avoid other boaters paths. Whether driving my sailboat, ski boat, john boat or canoe. I try not to even let it be a question as to who has the right of way.
