Your observation is correct and it reappears from time to time in discussion forums.
I like to tease monohull adicts by saying that the Open 60 class, Volvo 70, 49er, etc. are clearly in the middle of a Darwinian-type evolution from monohull to multihull.
Another way to say the same thing:
Monohulls are following an evolutionary path that will eventually arrive to a multihull of one kind or another. However, they are doing it the hard way, so lots of strange creatures will face extinction until they get to where we are now.
