Does anyone use sacrificial anodes? If so, where do you attach them?

I sail exclusively in salt water and have seen some seriously corroded boats.. I would love to avoid this. I sail about 100 days a year on my 1 boat so I want to preserve it as much as I can.

I do rinse off my cat with some freshwater (all the blocks, cleats, travleres, and all areas where dissimilar metals are) every night if I leave the cat on the beach (Friday and sat nights), and bring it through the car/boat wash every Sunday when it leaves the beach.

Thanks,

Man, the title of this thread would make a GREAT name for a band!

(Thanks to Dave Barry, who was always on the look-out for new band names!)

Here's a question I've yet to find a suitable answer for...do sacraficial anodes only do their thing while in the water? Does it need to be immersed to complete the circuit and corrode the anode? Been thinking of adding one to my launch trailer...but if it only works when immersed, there's not much point.

Only works when the circuit is closed, ie. when disimilar metals are immersed in a conducting solution. A dry boat will never corrode galvanically.

A good fresh water wash then left to dry is all that is required to reduce corrosion considerably.

I use Duralac, attached between the dissimilar metals. (It's a paste. Barium Chromate, I think.)
