I think Andrew might have been sailing close-hauled or close to it, and the other boat dove down on top of him, maybe on a broad reach?

Maybe Andrew threw the boat in irons to "duck" the overtaking boat at the last minute, or somehow stop his boat altogether to avoid collision?
