I am not familiar with the Proust snuffer but I do have experience with the pole-end snuffers and a mid-pole snuffer made by a US Tornado sailor, Lars Guck- I believe there is info. on Lars web page about that one.
I much prefer the midpole snuffer due to decreased windage and weight more centralized. I have my "skunk" (as Guck refers to his snuffer) just forward of an imaginary line projecting down from the forestay- ala the Tornados and it works well there. I use a similar system to the Tornados for the halyard and have been putting the snuffer bag on top of the tramp rather than under.
