For sand, I use 2x4 (about 2' long) with a line tied to them.
We keep our boats on the beach over here for 6 months per year; through many spring and autumn storms and this is the only reliable way to do it as far as I know.
Some use old vehicle tires that are buried but that would be sufficient to moor a bulk carrier to.
