I have always been an independent and I've always voted for which ever party's candidate I think will do the best job for Americans re jobs/economy/defense.
I would estimate many folk are "issue" voters rather than "party" voters. But you have to know how the game works to be effective. 3500 years ago, Hammurabi attempted to develop a system by which the "powerful" did not harm the weak. I think we're still trying to make that ideal system work. We're just not very good at it.
