The issue with the WWII veterans was on the radio in the Netherlands. These guys bloody well liberated our little postage stamp country, its a crying shame that they are not getting the respect they deserve. They're welcome to stay at my place in the Netherlands any day. Soon the last of their generation will have passed on and we will have missed the unique opportunity of paying them the tribute they deserve. If it wasn't for them, the western hemisphere would have a Fuhrer today...
DennisMe,
Over here there are no more respected and honored than those who served, especially in WW2. My grandfather landed in Anzio, my other grandfather was a fighter pilot in the Pacific. My grandfather who was a grunt on the ground has some amazing stories. I've wanted to record his personal history for a long time now ... I think I might try and do it while I'm home for Waterfowl Festival this year.
Anyways - the fact that the memorial is "closed" in the first place is a sham. Its an open-air, free standing edifice that has no staff. The effort of closing it cost the government more money than if they just left it open. Its being used as a political football in the way that the stories above are. Its shameful and should be called out as such. After the vets "stormed the barricades" the government came back and wired shut the flimsy things so that they couldn't be pushed aside. I think they're very mistaken if they think that its going to keep those men out of their memorial.
